Turnitin is a service that provides a number of useful features for students, faculty and other instructors who are dealing with written assignments. Turnitin provides a suite of tools for submitting, grading, and returning papers online, as well as interactive calendars, discussion boards, and more. In addition to the well-known originality checking, the Turnitin service also provides an ability to manage written assignment submissions and can be used to provide online feedback or even student peer review.Attached to this web page is a handout which contains three student papers from Economics courses which have been anonymized. The first is highly plagiarized, which is easy to see. The second has a lot of chunks from other sources, but if you look more closely all those chunks are given references in the paper, so there isn't a problem in terms of plagiarism. But at the same time an instructor can also see that the student built the paper by just stitching together pieces from other people's papers, which usually results in a terrible essay. The third is a paper that is almost entirely original. The three samples give a fairly good idea of the time that the software can save instructors in detecting and documenting plagiarism, and also the insights that the software can give in to how a paper was researched and written.

Instructor Manual For Cpr
- Inform students as early as possible about the use of Turnitin, preferably in the course syllabus.
- It is your responsibility to provide students with the course number (created by Turnitin) and password (which you create); it is recommended this information be placed in the syllabus, UR Courses, and/or on the assignment sheet.
- To make students more comfortable using Turnitin:
- Create assignments so that students can see the Originality Report AND re-submit the assignment until the due date. This will allow them to view the Originality Report on their assignment and make revisions if they choose. Allowing students to view their Originality Report prior to a final submission will demystify the Originality Report and even allow them to improve their assignment.
- Frame Turnitin as a tool for online submission and grading, as well as an opportunity for students to improve their assignments before a final submission. Inform students that Turnitin is intended to deter plagiarism, not “catch” plagiarism.
- Encourage students to visit the Library’s Information Desk for assistance in using Turnitin.
- We suggest that professors/instructors do not allow submitted papers to be stored in Turnitin’s repository. However, if professors/instructors do choose to have papers submitted to the Turnitin repository, then they should make students aware that they can have their papers removed after the fact (contact Information Services to have the student paper removed).
